problem with card preview

Postby cpprules » Wed Oct 26, 2005 9:40 am

I use the newest version of MTG Studio, and i have a problem with card preview. The thing is that i can't preview cropped cards, only full. When i double click on card preview ( which displays a hand without a finger ), the program opens cropped card art in a new window, alone! I've done everything right!
And yes the full art works perfectly.
Help, Help, Help, Help,....

and yes i noted another error, in CardArter when you finish downloading a zip file, Program runs an dialog box where buttons are scrambled.
I mean, that yes means no and such. Or theres no diffrence.
And when creating your own card, same thing hapens when you want to exit.

The thing is that i can't preview cropped cards, only full.

MTG Studio currently does not support visualization of cropped card art. Such functionality is available but not embedded within the application since none of the users (currently more than 22'000) have complained for such feature. I muself own almost all 14'000 full images for all cards. Finding full images is much easier than cropped ones with good quality. My primary source for high quality full scans is http://www.magiccards.info (Example: Battle of Light http://magiccards.info/scans/en/rav/2.jpg).

When i double click on card preview ( which displays a hand without a finger ), the program opens cropped card art in a new window, alone! I've done everything right!

The "new window" is the default Windows picture preview. If by any chancde you have cropped art in the acrd art directory there is a great chance to open it as it is (without frames, PT, rules, etc.)

And yes the full art works perfectly.

I am glad to hear that.

The conclusion:
Support for cropped card art is almost 90% complete but most of the registered users insist on having the "Own Collection (aka Inventory)" feature to catalog their personal card ownings and prices.

If you insist support for cropped can be added.

but in the help file this text appeared "and the card will be rendered",
i insist about the cropped art. I mean it's realy easy to code, about an hout or two.

but in the help file this text appeared "and the card will be rendered",

Where exactly you found it? What is the name of the topic? Perhaps it is a mistake and must be fixed.

Coding Cropped Images visualization is not as easy as it seems since a number of considerations must be made:

- all texts must be anti aliased for better presentation
- what frame to be used when rendering the acrd
- render the card name. When the name is not so short and can not be displayed properly schrink the font size. Example: ("Our market research card...")
- mana cost must be rendered with the appripriate mana cost images from right to left
- the card type line must be rendered below the cropped art image. If it si too long it must be schrinked
- render the appropriate expansion symbol taking in consideration the rarity of the card
- render the card rules with images for the mana costs {W}{U}{B}{R}{G} and the {T} symbol. Some card rulings are equally justified, some left justified and some editions centered
- the rendered text may include italic text for ability hints such as
Vigilance (does not tap when attacking)
- the rendered text and the flavor text must be correctly sized in order to fit into the rulings box
- render the copyright message which is differs from edition to edition
- render the artist name
- some editions have brush symbol (white or black) before the artist name
- some artist names are centered, and some are left justified
- render the power and toughenss from right to left. some editions have shield and sword before the correcponding power and toughness sumbols
- render the copyright message and the collector number
- some editions have separating line between the rulings text and flavor text
- some cards are rendered very difficult such as Split Cards, Flip Cards, Multi Cards, Rotated Cards.

I can think of lots more additional tasks related to Cropped Art visualization.

Conclusion: rendering Cropped Art images is not so easy as it seems but certainly is an achievable task (within a reasonable time)

I mean it's realy easy to code, about an hout or two.

Feel free to donate code if you have such for rendering the cropped art. C++ code can be easily ported to Delphi.

For both errors please send a screenshot to gaddlord@palmroot.com and a short description to reproduce the problem.

Well there are two programs that have perfect vizuilaztion :
MTG Editor - Java
MTG Set Editor - Visual Basic
and they are both open sourced.
Vizualization doesn't has to be perfect, just that it display something you can gaze upon.
You aren't going to print the card just preview it...
So a basic text on a bmp should do fine.

And here's where it says about croped art in help file:

MTG Studio -> Deck Editor -> Card Arter
4.2) Cropped art is just the card art itself. This will cause MTG Studio to render the card, and instead of a black box where the art should be, the cropped jpeg will take its place. This will make your cards use whatever theme in MTG Studio you are using, and you will have art.

The bug is confirmed and reproducible. It is fixed in the next version 0.5.7

Thanks, cpprules.
