New card data

Postby Skarsol » Fri May 03, 2013 6:14 pm

About how long does it normally take for new cards to be added to the program after they come out?

Hello,

Usually it take less than two weeks after the official release date.

Is the data in a file we can edit? I've got no problem doing basic data entry if it means I don't have to wait weeks after release to be able to put the new cards in my decks. :(

Looking at the .hfw file it appears to just be a basic database format. Had sqlite indicators in it, but it doesn't seem openable with an sqlite viewer. Would it be possible to release an editor for this?

I would also like to be able to import new set myself. Of course, it may lack some features or search capabilities (new effect, powers... will not be searchable) but as I use MtG Studio as an inventory tool mainly, it is not a big issue.

But it is not the way it works with MtG Studio.

That seems like a really big oversight. :( If I were making money off of a MTG inventory/deck software, I would just plan that the week before the release would be "input all the data into my program" week. Kinda frustrating learning this the week after purchasing with that expectation in mind. Guess I shoulda done more research.

I can't speak for Gadd, but I do think that he posted something in the past about wanting to keep the pseudo-proprietary nature of the database file. The file is a big part of his work and where his cashflow is coming from.

I understand wanting to keep it proprietary, but as part of acknowledging that, he should also acknowledge that it loses a lot of value not being updated promptly. :(

Laugh, saw that Gaddlord had the most recent post in the forum and got excited. Alas.

What's taking so long? The set has been "officially released" for more than a week, but the cards have all been published and confirmed (by WotC) for more than 17 days. I can appreciate wanting to protect a time investment by encoding the information engine that feeds the entire product, but there are a lot of us out here with the time and know-how to assist (for free) if it's too demanding to keep the program updated in a timely manner. Some will surely argue 8 days post official release is not unreasonably long, and in the big scheme of things its probably not. But to those of us who actually rely on the features to track our resources and build our decks, it's an eternity. I value my time as well.

Re: New card data - when?

Gadlord,

It would be very helpful if you would give your customer base at least an estimated date of when the updated release will become
available for download.
