card sorting suggestion

Postby ChiTownMagicGuy » Wed Mar 16, 2011 11:46 pm

It would be very convenient to be able to sort on more than one column at a time in the pool, collection and deck windows.

For example sort by card name and then expansion. This would make it considerably easier to find the correct edition for a card that is in multiple expansions.

It is possible to sort by more than one column... you just press ctrl+click on the column to add it to the sort order.

That doesn't seem to be working in the deck or pool windows.

You should hold Shift and click over column headers.
Holding Ctrl + Click remove the column from the selection.

You can also use View|Cards|Sort menu.

Sort order by Name and Edition not quite right.

Postby ChiTownMagicGuy » Fri Mar 18, 2011 9:19 am

I have the sort order set for Name and Edition in ascending order.

I am getting the following:

For the card Ardent Militia the editions are in the following order:

8E
7E
S1
6E
WL
PT

In my opinion the sort order should be:

6E
7E
8E
PT
S1
WL

Sorting works properly for Name and Edition Name together:

Eighth Edition
Portal
Seventh Edition
Sixth Edition
Starter 1999

I disagree. In my opinion it should be by set name, like it is. why would you want it by set abbreviation? That seems arbitrary to me.

Could you give your reasons please?

If I select to sort by card name and expansion abbreviation then MTG Studio should sort on the card name and expansion abbreviation columns.

In this case I believe that MTG studio is sorting incorrectly (6E should be listed before 8E, for example)

If I select to sort by card name and expansion name then MTG Studio should sort on the card name and expansion name columns.

In this case MTG Studio is sorting correctly (Eight edition should be before Sixth edition).

I don't understand what the sorting algorithm is for
8E
7E
S1
6E
WL
PT

It is not numeric (6 is less then 7), alphanumeric(6 comes before S), alphabetic (P comes before W) or by full expansion name (PT comes before WL).

When sorting text that contains numbers as well as letters it is generally accepted policy that the numbers will come before the letters. Here are several examples:

Example 1 (numbers are in numerical order followed by letters in alphabetic order)
1ST_Name
2ND_Name
LastName

Example 2 (alphabetic sort):
Eight
Seven

Example 3 (alphabetic sort for letters, numeric sort for numbers):
Number1Test
Number2Test
NumberTest

I hope this cleared up what I meant to say.

Sets aren't ordered alphabetically... they are ordered using the release date, from the newest to the oldest. And sorry about shift and ctrl, my bad.

Ahh yes I see. There could be a bug. I think Gad is sorting by edition name in both cases. He should be sorting by Edition Name and Edition Abbreviations.

If you look at the names of the edition abbreviations then the sort order is correct.

So my guess is both columns (edition abbrev and edition name) are using the same sort (by edition name) but i am not sure..

This is correct - edition abbreviations are sorted by the release dates of the sets.

I don't see an issue here.
