Commander cards legality and deck listing

Postby CptDobey » Mon Jun 27, 2011 12:10 pm

Hello,

The 2.1 release added all the cards from the 5 Commander Decks. The legality of all those cards is "banned" from everything.

It is ok for the new cards, but the old ones (as Sol Ring, Chain Reaction...), they are allowed in their respective formats aren't they ?

About the Commander decks, are they available somewhere as .deck files ?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Actually, according to the gatherer, all the new cards are legal in the following formats:
Legacy
Vintage
Freeform
Prismatic
Tribal Wars Legacy
Classic
Singleton 100
Commander

I use the following to get the updates:

Do you think gatherer is more accurate?

This is a bit offtopic but anyway. You can use the following link for the commander decks being described http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/732. MTG Studio 2.1 does not come with out of the box Commander decks available but you can easily build them your self - just start typing the first letters of a card name in the grid and press Enter to add to the deck.

If you look at these lists, Sol Ring is not banned from all formats, as the "commander deck sol ring" is (in MTG Studio).

Sol Ring is banned because the whole Commander set in MTG Studio is marked as not valid for any format.

Do you have a credible reference to which formats Commander set is allowed?

I have added the Commander set being legal for Legacy, Vintage and Commander (of course) formats.
The change will be available in 2.2.

The change is based on
Commander is the first deck-based retail product to contain new and previously unreleased cards. These cards will become legal in the sanctioned Eternal formats Vintage and Legacy, but not in Standard or Extended, upon the sets release
from http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Commander

and the wizards.com forums http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75842/27745601/Commander_Legality?post_id=498150565.

The "These" is referring to the new cards, not the existing ones. A card, whatever its edition can be use in the format where it is allowed.

If card X exists in unlimited and another version exists in M11, then you can use any version in T2 (at the time this message is posted ;))

Cultivate, a M11 cards is T2 legal in all its existing versions, M11 or Commander.

The only (small) exception is about alpha cards because they have unusual corners, thus you have to sleeve them. Of course all the cards which have a different art on the back (Champion decks, Collector Edition...) are banned.

Edit: Time spiraled cards from previous edition (purple ones) are, I think, also limited to the format where they are already legal.

Edit 2:
Here: http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/resour ... frstandard
The 51 new cards will be legal in Eternal formats (that's Vintage and Legacy), but they will not be legal in Standard, Extended, or Block Constructed.

Nothing is said about the other cards. The general policy is: if a card is legal in a given format, then you can use any version of that card. Thus, as an example, M11 "commander deck version " cards are T2 legal.

M10 Doom Blade is T2 legal because there is a M11 Doom Blade, so, CMD Doom Blade is also T2 legal.

Is this issue still present in the latest 2.2 version?
