Convert MTG Studio deck to Wagic the Homebrew

Postby Azul » Sat Dec 26, 2009 12:16 am

Is there any way you could include/make a quick converter from MTG Studio's deck format to Wagic the Homebrew. This might allow a number of us to build a deck in Studio and then get a chance playtesting it against a semi-decent computer a.i.

Wagic is playable on PSP, Windows, and Linux. It comes with full rules enforcement and a huge amount of cards (although there are still a huge number of cards that aren't included yet).

http://wololo.net/download (Wagic can be obtained here)
http://wololo.net/wiki/ (Supported cards are here)

Wagic's deck format looks like this:

Code: Select all
#NAME:Premade G/R
#DESC:A Red/Green deck with simple mechanics
#DESC:to get you started.
#DESC:We recommend to create your own decks
#DESC:to get the full Wagic Fun!

Forest (10E) *11
Mountain (10E) *12

Aggressive Urge (10E) *4
Wall of Wood (10E) *4
Llanowar Elves (10E) *4
Mirri, Cat Warrior (10E)
Scion of the Wild (10E) *4
Primal Rage (10E) *2

Lightning Elemental (10E) *4
Shock (10E) *4
Firebreathing (10E) *2
Raging Goblin (10E) *4
Anaba Bodyguard (10E) *4

A simple converter would be fine, but an added feature that would be great would be checking your current deck against the list of supported cards that was supplied earlier.

I'm not sure what kind of cooperation developers like with their projects but supporting Wagic in whatever rudimentary way possible might also help spur on sales of MTG Studio. The program is absolutely fantastic. I've bought it and used it to catalogue my whole collection. I believe that there are a large number of users who could benefit from some minor integration of the two programs.

The deck format looks pretty simple (similar to the MWS one).

Being an open source project makes the things even easier.

I believe this is the correct abbreviation-set name mapping:

Code: Select all
ALL   Alliances
APC   Apocalypse
ARB   Alara Reborn
ARN   Arabian Nights
ATQ   Antiquities
BOK   Betrayers of Kamigawa
CFX   Conflux
CHK   Champions of Kamigawa
CSP   Coldsnap
DIS   Dissension
DRK   The Dark
DST   Darksteel
EVE   Eventide
EXO   Exodus
FEM   Fallen Empires
FUT   Future Sight
GPT   Guildpact
HML   Homelands
ICE   Ice Age
INV   Invasion
JUD   Judgment
LEG   Legends
LGN   Legions
LRW   Lorwyn
M10   Magic 2010
MIR   Mirage
MOR   Morningtide
MRD   Mirrodin
MRQ   Mercadian Masques
NMS   Nemesis
ODY   Odyssey
ONS   Onslaught
P02   Portal Second Age
PCY   Prophecy
PLC   Planar Chaos
PLS   Planeshift
POR   Portal
PTK   Portal Three Kingdoms
RAV   Ravnica: City of Guilds
RV    Revised
SCG   Scourge
SHM   Shadowmoor
SOK   Saviors of Kamigawa
STH   Stronghold
TMP   Tempest
TOR   Torment
TSP   Time Spiral
UDS   Urza's Destiny
ULG   Urza's Legacy
USG   Urza's Saga
VIS   Visions
WTH   Weatherlight
ZEN   Zendikar

I will make a "proof of concept" test for supporting this deck format.

Btw from what I have seen there is no way to use Sideboard in the deck, right?

The support of Wagic the Homebrew in MTG Studio is already a fact for the forthcoming 1.7.1 version.

I am still thinking whether to restrict the list of cards allowed for Magic Homebrew to those cards or leave it upto the user.

If I have to support the list of Homebrew cards it will be crazy. (I am almost crazy with supporting the MTGOIII card Ids).

What do you think?

Here is a teaser of the Open Deck screen with support for MTH:

And here it is opened in MTG Studio:

and quite logically a new View|Wagic the Homebrew menu is added as well:

I have sent an email to MTH developers and posted a thread in their forum.

You are correct that you are unable to sideboard cards in Wagic so far.

Thanks for the amazingly fast and positive response to my request. It's great to see a developer take such good care of its users. I hope that supporting Wagic will bring both of your programs more users.

Would you like a beta download for testing?

Yeah, I would like the chance to try it out and see how it works. I'm no superstar magic player but I do enjoy the game in all its forms.

There are two issues you might have integrating Wagic into MTG Studio.

The first is that Wagic does recognize the deck format the I previously gave you. It seems that when you actually run the deck in Wagic it converts the words into card numbers.

Here's a example from part of one of my decks that I created using the text format.

#NAME:Army of Light
#DESC:Your righteous army will
#DESC:crush everything in your path.
1334
1367
1367
89012
129572
129716
135258
135258
135258
135258

I always keep a text version of it as backup anyway so that doesn't matter in the long run.

The second issue (that I'm not entirely sure of) is that I think the cards in your deck also have to exist in your collection or things get messed up a little. So the deck editor might need to write the cards to the collection.dat file as well. I'm not sure of all the particulars.

You can currently get download a copy of the collection.dat file containing 4 copies of each supported card in the thread "2nd Official Wagic Deck Competition"

The file is in this thread

The forthcoming MTG Studio 1.7.3 will handle both named and meta cards (cards wtih IDs in the deck) for Wagic the Homebrew decks.

All 100 decks you have submited to me canbe parsed now.

The filter View|Wagic the Homebrew only is also extended to filter exactly the 5149 cards that currently Wagic can play with.

Wagic has just updated to 0.12.1. I look forward to seeing the new cards included in the next release.
